Increase in Electric Vehicle Sales in Europe (EU + CEFTA + UK)
The Serbian Association of New Vehicle and Parts Importers has received the semi-annual report from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) on newly registered cars in the European Union.
In the first half of 2025, new car registrations in the EU fell by 1.9% compared to the same period last year. When including data from EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland) and the United Kingdom, the decline is slightly smaller, at -0.9%.
In the EU alone, 5,576,568 units were sold (compared to 5,684,279 last year), while including EFTA and the UK, a total of 6,815,320 cars were sold in the first six months of this year, compared to 6,879,158 in the same period last year.
Electric Vehicles
Sales of electric vehicles in the first half of 2025 reached 869,271 units, accounting for 15.6% of the EU market share. During the same period last year, 712,451 electric vehicles were sold. This means that 158,820 more electric cars reached customers in the first six months of this year, representing a growth of 22%.
Considering all newly registered electric vehicles in the EU, EFTA, and the UK, the number rises to 1,190,346 units (933,309 in the same period last year), which is an increase of 24.9%.
Three out of the four largest EU markets, which account for over 60% of electric vehicle registrations, recorded growth: Germany (+35.1%), Belgium (+19.5%), and the Netherlands (+6.1%). This contrasts with France, which saw a decline of 6.4%.
In the UK, the expansion of electric vehicles continues. In the January–June period of this year, 224,841 units were sold, compared to 167,096 in the same period in 2024 — a growth of 34.6%. Norway also saw continued growth, with 70,748 electric cars sold in the first half of 2025 compared to 51,418 in 2024, a rise of 37.6%.
A particularly interesting case is Iceland — a country perceived as less suitable for EVs due to its cold climate — where 957 EVs were sold in the first half of 2024, and 2,283 in 2025, a growth of 138.6%. It's worth noting that Iceland’s population is only about 400,000.
