ACEM (Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers) Released Data on the European Motorcycle Market for the First Three Quarters of 2024

The Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) announced the results of new motorcycle sales in the five largest and most significant markets in Europe for the first nine months of this year.

Data analysis on new registrations shows excellent motorcycle sales, marking the best performance in the last five years, while revealing slightly weaker interest among Europeans in mopeds and electric two-wheelers.

New motorcycle registrations in the five largest European markets—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom—reached 885,500 units during the first nine months of 2024. This represents an increase of about 1.3% compared to the same period in 2023, when 874,004 units were sold.

However, it's worth noting that this result is mainly due to strong growth in "powerhouses" Spain and Italy, where positive sales figures were achieved.

The numbers illustrate this clearly.

In Spain, 163,476 new motorcycles and mopeds were sold in the first nine months of this year, showing a 6.1% year-on-year growth. Sellers were also satisfied in Italy, where 286,052 units were sold—a slightly lower growth rate than in Spain, but this 5.3% annual increase confirms the stability of Europe’s largest market for these vehicles.

The other three members of the "Big Five" recorded weaker results. In France, 164,387 units were sold from January to September this year, representing a 2.2% market decline compared to the same period in 2023.

Germany also saw a downward sales trend, with 185,377 units delivered, reflecting a 2.7% drop compared to the same period last year (January-September).

The largest decline in sales in the first nine months of this year, at 4.0%, was recorded in the United Kingdom, with 86,208 units sold.

Moped registrations reached a total volume of 132,533 units across the six European moped markets monitored by ACEM, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

This registration volume represents a significant decrease of 14.5% compared to last year’s same period, when 155,090 mopeds were delivered.

The most concerning aspect for manufacturers of this vehicle type is the decline across all observed countries: in Germany, sales dropped by almost a fifth. Only 12,368 mopeds were sold in the first nine months of 2024, an annual decrease of 18.8%!

France also saw a massive drop in moped sales during the observed period, with 49,023 mopeds sold, 17.7% less than the previous year.

Spain recorded a 17.5% market drop in moped sales in the first nine months of this year, with only 10,709 units delivered.

The Netherlands also saw a double-digit sales decline (23,546 units, -14.9%), while Belgium (22,221 units, -8.6%) and Italy (14,666 units, -4.2%) had smaller losses.

Commenting on the current situation in the sector, ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot noted that overall, the European market for these vehicles is stable, which is the most important factor.

"The European motorcycle market was entirely stable in the first nine months of 2024, resulting from mixed national performance. Long-term trends highlight record levels in Italy and Spain—the overall motorcycle market aligns with the best nine-month performance in the last five years, while moped registrations and electric vehicle sales are declining, which will be further explored in upcoming analyses. The last quarter of the year is typically slower in volume, but attention is shifting to new models, which will boost consumer interest," stated ACEM's secretary general.
